Library hold troubleshooting

What does “Clean up hold” mean in Libby?

“Clean up hold?” is Libby's check-in about a hold on a title that may have expired or been removed from your library's collection. Cancel it if you no longer want the title or need room for other holds. Keep it only if you still want it and accept that the library may add it back—but that is not guaranteed.

Quick answer

Clean up hold is a decision prompt, not proof that a new copy is on its way.

Libby's current status guidance says libraries may leave expired titles visible and use their existing holds to help decide whether to buy more copies. The Clean up hold? message is a friendly prompt to cancel an affected hold if it no longer serves you. It does not mean that a copy is currently available, that a replacement has been ordered, or that the hold will certainly become borrowable.

Read the status carefully

Unknown Wait describes current availability; Clean up hold asks what you want to do with the hold.

Unknown Wait

The title cannot currently be borrowed.

Libby says this status means the title has expired or been removed from the collection. It is not a normal queue estimate, so do not plan around it as though it were a delivery date.

Clean up hold?

Review whether the hold is still worth keeping.

The related prompt lets you decide whether to cancel the affected hold and release a place that may count toward your library card's hold limit.

A title returns to the collection

An existing hold can move normally again.

Libby says a hold still on the wait list can begin moving again if the library purchases more copies or adds the title back. Treat that as a possibility, not a commitment from the library.

Choose the useful next step

Cancel when the title no longer fits; keep the hold only when the uncertainty is acceptable.

  1. Open Shelf, then Holds. Libby's hold overview puts the active status and management controls in this area. Confirm the exact library card and edition before changing anything.
  2. Decide whether you still want this edition from this library. Canceling makes sense when you have moved on, found a suitable edition elsewhere, or need room for a different hold. Keeping it can make sense when you still want it and are comfortable waiting without a known timeframe.
  3. Cancel through Manage Hold if that is your decision. Libby directs listeners to Manage Hold > Cancel Hold. This leaves the wait list; it is not the same as returning a borrowed audiobook or deleting an app download.
  4. Ask the library about a title-specific question. Libby recommends contacting the library for more help. The library, not Audiobook Hub, controls whether a title is licensed again, which edition it carries, and the hold rules for its cardholders.

Do not use Suspend as a fix for an Unknown Wait or Clean up hold. Suspend is Libby's option for a hold that you still want to keep in the queue but are not ready to borrow; it does not restore a title that is absent from the collection. Our guide to placing a Libby audiobook hold explains the ready-hold choices in more detail.

Check eligible alternatives

If you have multiple saved libraries, compare the same title before abandoning the search.

Libby's multiple-library instructionssay listeners with more than one saved library can use a title's availability control to compare its borrowing options across those libraries. Only choose a card you are eligible to use, and compare the format, narrator, language, and edition rather than assuming every library offers the same audiobook.

A different saved library may offer a separate availability or wait-list situation, but it does not repair the original library's affected hold. For the wider setup and eligibility context, see our multiple library cards in Libby guide.

Do not confuse it with a ready hold

A ready hold has a 72-hour action window; a Clean up hold has no pickup window.

When a normal hold becomes available, Libby says you have 72 hours (3 days) to borrow, suspend, or cancel it. That is different from an Unknown Wait or Clean up hold, which concerns a title that is not currently borrowable. If you see an available title instead, use Libby's ready-hold guidance to make the timely borrow-or-suspend decision.

Common questions

Clean up hold answers for Libby listeners.

Will I lose my place if I cancel a Clean up hold?

Canceling removes the hold from that library's wait list. If the library later adds the title again, you would need to check its availability and place a new hold if one is offered. Keep the existing hold only if you still want the title and accept that no return date is promised.

Does Clean up hold mean my library will never carry the title again?

No. Libby says that if the library decides to purchase more copies or add the title back while your hold remains, it can start moving normally again. The message does not predict what a particular library will decide, so contact the library if its collection plans affect your choice.

Can I borrow a different audiobook while I decide?

Yes, subject to your library card's current borrowing and hold limits. A Clean up hold is about one affected title; it does not by itself mean the rest of the library's audiobook collection is unavailable.
