Quick answer
Renew from the loan's Manage Loan menu when Libby offers the option.
Libby's renewal flow applies to eligible titles a few days before their due date. On your Shelf and Loans screen, open the audiobook's Manage Loan menu, choose Renew Loan, select an offered loan period if needed, and confirm. A renewal is not guaranteed: your library controls lending policies, and a title can be blocked by another listener's hold or its own access rules.
Renewal steps
Use this path once the audiobook is close to its due date.
- Open Shelf, then Loans. Find the audiobook you want to keep listening to. Libby keeps active loans on Shelf, not in your general search results.
- Select Manage Loan. This is the menu Libby uses for loan details and actions, including return and—when available—renewal.
- Choose Renew Loan. Libby says a title can be renewed a few days before it is due. If you do not see Renew yet, check the due date and return later rather than returning the audiobook.
- Review the loan period, then confirm. Libby may offer a loan-period choice on the renewal screen. Pick the available period that fits your plan and complete the final Renew Loan confirmation.
- Check the new due date before going offline. Start the audiobook once after renewal and check the active loan in Shelf. That confirms you are looking at the renewed loan rather than the previous due date or a separate hold.
When renewal is unavailable
A missing Renew button usually signals a library rule or another listener's turn.
Too early
Wait until Libby's renewal window opens
Libby says renewals become available a few days before the due date. The app tells you how much longer to wait when the renewal window has not opened.
A hold exists
Place a hold for the next available copy
When another listener is waiting, Libby shows Place Hold instead of Renew. A hold reserves your place for a later loan; it does not extend the audiobook you currently have.
Copy or catalog rule
Check the edition and library collection
Libby identifies skip-the-line copies as non-renewable, and a title removed from the library's catalog cannot be renewed. Search your library's live collection for another edition or copy.
These are rules set around a particular loan, not a statement about Libby as a whole. Libby says each library chooses its digital titles and sets its own lending policies, including how long a listener can borrow and how many titles they can have. For a broader availability decision, use our Libby versus Hoopla audiobook guide.
Avoid a common mix-up
Returning early ends this loan; it does not make the audiobook renewable.
Libby says digital loans return automatically on their due date, so you do not need to do anything merely to avoid a late fee. The Manage Loan menu also contains Return Early. Use that only if you have finished or want to release the loan: it ends access to the current audiobook loan. Do not choose it while you are waiting for the renewal window or trying to keep the same loan active.
Download status is separate from the loan status. A downloaded audiobook is still a library loan and follows its due date or renewal result. If you plan to listen without a connection after extending the loan, reopen it in the Libby app and confirm the download before leaving Wi-Fi. Our Audible download guide covers the different download workflow for an Audible title.
If you need the audiobook by a deadline
Separate a current library loan from a purchase option.
A renewal depends on the live library loan. If the title has a hold and you need this exact edition before your place becomes available, compare the library route with a current purchase listing only after checking the narrator, language, and edition. A paid listing is not an extension of the Libby loan, and prices, membership offers, catalog availability, and regional access can change.
For that borrowing-versus-purchase decision, see Audible versus Libby for audiobooks. If the audiobook is simply unavailable at your library, Libby's catalog choice is library-specific; searching a different service does not guarantee the same edition.
Common questions
What to check before the due date arrives.
Can I renew a Libby audiobook if someone has it on hold?
Usually no. Libby says it shows Place Hold instead of Renew when another listener is waiting. Join the hold line to borrow the title again when your turn arrives, and do not assume the current loan will continue past its due date.
How early can I renew an audiobook in Libby?
Libby says the renewal option appears a few days before the due date. The exact screen will tell you how long to wait if it is too soon, so use the active loan's date instead of a fixed number of days from another library.
Will Libby charge a late fee if I do nothing?
No. Libby says its digital loans return automatically on the due date. Your library's lending rules still determine whether a title can be renewed, how long the loan lasts, and how many loans you may have at once.
