  2. Search for the exact audiobook edition. Confirm the format, narrator, language, and availability label. Libby lets you place a hold when a title is not ready; in Hoopla, look for whether the listing is Instant or Flex and whether it currently says Available or Wait List.
  3. Read the limit in your own account. Libby says each library sets loan and hold limits, and Hoopla says borrowing limits can vary by library. A service's general marketing page cannot tell you how many audiobooks your card permits this month.
  4. Download before you need offline access. Libby's mobile app can download loans, but its website requires an internet connection. Hoopla's app guide says eligible borrowed titles can be downloaded; let the transfer finish and remember that automatic return rules still apply.

Waits and borrowing caps

An immediate Hoopla result is possible, but it is not a promise for every title.

Libby says a listener can place a hold when a library title is unavailable and receive a notification when it is ready. Its loan and hold limits come from the library, not Libby as a universal number. This makes Libby a practical route when you can wait for a specific edition or already see it available in your library's catalog.

Hoopla's current patron materials distinguish Instant titles from Flex. Instant titles are described as immediately available without a wait, while Flex titles can be borrowed when marked Available or held when marked Wait List. That distinction matters: “Hoopla has no holds” is too broad. Treat the current title label and your library's remaining borrow count as the decision evidence.

Offline listening

A download is a travel convenience, not permanent access.

Libby says book and audiobook loans can be downloaded in the mobile app and offers controls for automatic downloads and Wi-Fi use. It also says download settings are unavailable on libbyapp.com, where an internet connection is always required. Hoopla's iOS guide says a borrowed title can be downloaded to the device for offline use, while noting that some BingePass content is streaming only.
