Quick answer
Place Hold for the exact audiobook edition, then manage it from Shelf > Holds.
Libby's current holds guidance says the Place Holdbutton appears when a title is not available to borrow. Select it from the title's details screen, choose the appropriate saved library card if Libby asks, and let the app confirm the hold. The wait list, lending rules, and number of digital copies are controlled by that participating library—not by Audiobook Hub or Libby alone.
Place the hold
Start from the audiobook's details screen, not a generic wish list.
- Search or browse your selected library. Confirm that the listing is the audiobook, not an ebook or a similarly titled edition. Check the narrator, language, and running time if those details matter to your choice.
- Open the title details. An unavailable title shows Place Hold rather than Borrow. A Borrow button means a copy is currently available and a hold is not the next step.
- Select Place Hold and confirm the card or library if prompted. This joins the queue for that library's copy. If you have several eligible cards, do not assume their availability or wait lists match.
- Open Shelf, then Holds. Confirm the new title appears there before closing the app. This is where Libby displays the hold's status and where you later borrow, suspend, or cancel it.
A title your library does not offer is a different case: Libby may show Notify Me instead of Place Hold. That registers interest in a title the library may add later; it does not add you to a current lending queue.
Track the wait
Use Shelf > Holds for the estimate, your place in line, and copies in use.
Libby's wait-list guidance places this information in Shelf > Holds. The number next to the cover is an estimated wait, while the hold details can show your position in line and how many copies are in use. Treat the estimate as planning information, not a promised delivery date: returns, new copies, changing demand, library purchasing, and account-specific lending rules can alter it.
Available now
Borrow the audiobook
Choose Borrow during the pickup window, select an offered loan period if prompted, and open the audiobook from Shelf > Loans after checkout.
Not ready yet
Suspend the hold
Suspend keeps your place in line while letting an available copy move to another reader. Unsuspend later when you are ready to receive it.
No longer interested
Cancel the hold
Use Manage Hold > Cancel Hold to leave the queue. A cancellation is sensible when the edition, timing, or library card is no longer right.
When the hold is ready
Decide within 72 hours: borrow, suspend, or cancel.
Libby says in its available-hold instructions that a ready hold generates a notification and gives you 72 hours (3 days) to act. Open the notification or go to Shelf > Holds. Borrow if you can begin within the offered loan period; suspend if the timing is wrong but you want to retain your queue position; cancel if you do not want the title.
If the window passes, Libby says it automatically suspends the hold once as a courtesy. A hold that stays suspended for 365 consecutive days can lapse, so review old holds rather than relying on a long pause as permanent storage. Notification delivery varies by device and your settings; the Shelf view is the dependable place to check the live state.
Use Suspend deliberately
Suspend protects your queue position; it does not schedule a guaranteed future checkout.
Libby renamed Deliver Later to Suspend. Its current explanation says a suspended hold keeps your place in line until you are ready. When you manually unsuspend it, Libby delivers the hold after you reach the top of the wait list again and another copy returns. That makes Suspend useful before travel, during a full listening queue, or when a loan limit would make a ready title inconvenient.
Do not suspend an audiobook merely because the estimate looks long; the title is already waiting in the queue. Use it when you are near or at availability and need to decline the copy without abandoning your place. If the issue is only a lack of device space after borrowing, see our Libby download-removal guide instead of changing the hold.
If you have more than one card
Compare the exact title across eligible saved libraries before accepting a long wait.
Libby notes that people with multiple libraries can use the Title Status control to see whether the same title is available or has a shorter wait list elsewhere. Only use cards you are eligible to hold, and verify the narrator, language, and format on each listing—libraries can license different editions. Our multiple library cards in Libby guide explains how card-specific availability affects the decision.
A hold is not a purchase or a reservation across every library in your account. Each library controls its catalog, copies, hold limits, loan period choices, and account authentication. Contact that library if a card needs verification or an account-level limit blocks a hold.
Common questions
Libby audiobook hold answers.
Why does a digital audiobook have a wait list?
Libby explains in its digital-copy guidance that libraries commonly license a limited number of copies and publishers may require each licensed copy to be loaned to one listener at a time. When all copies are in use, a hold joins the wait list for a returned or newly added copy.
Can I see my Libby hold without a push notification?
Yes. Go to Shelf, then Holds. Libby shows your hold status there; notifications are helpful, but your app or browser settings can affect when and how they arrive.
Can I keep my place in line if I am not ready for the audiobook?
Yes. Use Suspend rather than canceling when the title becomes available and you still want it later. Unsuspend it when you are ready to receive a copy after returning to the top of the wait list.
