Remove the local file
Follow this path in the Libby mobile app.
- Open Shelf, then Loans. This filters Shelf to your active book and audiobook loans.
- Find the audiobook with a Downloaded status. The download-status control appears next to the active loan. If the title is not downloaded, there is no local audiobook file to remove.
- Tap Downloaded, then choose Remove Download. Libby identifies this as the action that clears the downloaded copy from the device without returning the title to the library.
- Keep the loan if you still need it. Return to Shelf to confirm the audiobook remains among your loans. You can stream it when connected to the internet while its loan is active.
This workflow is for the app's local storage. Libby says download settings are unavailable on libbyapp.com, where an internet connection is required to use the service.

Libby says titles return automatically on their due dates. That means removing a download is not necessary to avoid late fees, and returning early is not necessary simply because your phone is low on space. In the mobile app, open Menu, then Downloads under Settings. Libby says you can choose Everything, Titles Under..., or Nothing for automatic book and audiobook downloads. The size-based option can exclude larger files, such as audiobooks, while allowing smaller loans to download automatically.
Treat that setting as a future-download preference, not a replacement for the Remove Download action on a file already stored on the device.
