Library audiobook help

How do you change the loan period for a Libby audiobook?

Choose it on the confirmation screen. When borrowing or renewing an audiobook, tap the period beside Borrowing for, select an option your library offers, and then finish the action. Loan periods vary by library and format, and the choice becomes the default for later checkouts in that format at that library.

Quick answer

Change the period before confirming the borrow or renewal, then verify the due date.

Libby's current loan-period instructions say that a listener can change the period for each title when borrowing or renewing it. The available choices are set by the library and can differ by format, so an audiobook can have a different set of options from another checkout. The selected period becomes the default for future checkouts in that same format at that same library.

When borrowing an available audiobook

Open the title, choose Borrow, and adjust the period before the final confirmation.

  1. Open the exact audiobook listing and select Borrow. Confirm the format and narrator before checking out; a book listing and audiobook listing can have different lending details.
  2. Find the period beside Borrowing for on the confirmation screen. Libby's borrowing guidance identifies that control as the place to change the period before you complete the loan.
  3. Choose one of the periods displayed for that checkout. Do not assume another library card, title format, or previous checkout supplies the same choices.
  4. Select Borrow again and inspect the resulting due date. Libby automatically returns loans on their due date, so treat the live loan screen as the final record for this checkout.

When renewing an audiobook

Use the same confirmation-screen choice if Libby offers a renewal.

The loan-period control is also available while renewing, according to Libby. Start only when the title is eligible for renewal, select the offered period on the confirmation screen, and then confirm the renewal. A renewal is not guaranteed: another listener's hold or the library's rules can prevent it. See our Libby audiobook renewal guide for the timing and hold-related limits.

Changing the period is separate from returning a title. If you are finished and want the copy to circulate, use Return Early; if you only need to clear phone storage while keeping the loan, use Remove Download instead.

What your choice changes

The setting follows the library and format, not every audiobook everywhere.

This checkout

Sets the current due-date window

The selected option applies to the audiobook you are borrowing or renewing. Confirm the final due date after the loan is complete.

Later checkouts

Updates a local default

Libby says your choice becomes the default for future checkouts in that format at that library, subject to the options it then offers.

Other library cards

Remain separate lending systems

Another saved library can set different periods and limits. Check the live confirmation screen whenever you switch libraries or formats.

Before you finalize

Use only the options Libby displays, and keep borrowing limits in view.

A loan period is not a universal app preference. Libby says choices vary by library and format. If the period you expected is absent, it is not currently available for that loan; the library can explain its own policy. Do not cancel a borrow in the hope of revealing a different option unless you are prepared to lose the available copy.

Audiobook loans count toward a library's borrowing limit, and libraries choose those limits. Libby says you can view loan and hold limits in Menu, then Manage Cards, though a library can also apply title-specific limits during borrowing. If you use more than one card, our multiple library cards in Libby guide explains how to check the exact title at each eligible library.

Common questions

Libby audiobook loan-period answers.

Can I change the loan period after I borrow a Libby audiobook?

Libby documents the change on the borrowing or renewal confirmation screen. After a loan is already active, use the live loan screen to check its due date; if renewal becomes available, you can choose an offered period while confirming that renewal.

Why is my Libby audiobook loan period different from another title?

Libby says loan periods vary by library and format. The current option list for that audiobook, card, and library is the one that applies.

Does a shorter Libby loan period change my library's rules?

No. It selects a period offered for that checkout and becomes Libby's default for future checkouts in that format at that library. The library still controls availability, loan options, and borrowing limits.
