Prepare an offline listen
Borrow first, then verify the downloaded copy.
- Borrow an available audiobook. A hold or saved title is not an active loan. From the title's details page, select Borrow, choose the loan period when your library offers that choice, and confirm the checkout.
- Stay connected while Libby downloads it. Libby's mobile-app defaults normally download book and audiobook loans over Wi-Fi. Large audiobooks can take longer, so do not treat the start of a download as proof that the whole file is ready.
- Check Shelf, then Loans. Libby identifies a downloaded loan with its downloaded status. A cloud status means the title is not stored locally and will stream when opened.
- Open the exact loan before leaving service. Confirm that the audiobook starts from the downloaded copy while you still have time to correct a failed or incomplete download. This also lets you spot a loan that has already expired or been returned.

If automatic download did not happen
Use Shelf to download the active loan yourself.
Libby's current manual route is Shelf, then Loans, then the download control beside the audiobook. Its help page says a title showing 100% downloaded is stored on the device. This is the right recovery step when automatic downloads are set to Nothing, when a size threshold skipped a larger audiobook, or when the device was not connected under the selected download rules.
If storage is the obstacle, do not return the loan just to remove a local file. Libby separates that action: Remove Download frees device space without ending an active loan, but it means the title must stream or download again before the due date.
Wi-Fi and mobile data
Decide whether large audiobook downloads may use cellular data.
In the Libby mobile app, open Menu, then Downloads under Settings. Libby lets you choose whether loans download automatically and whether downloads are limited to Wi-Fi. Its Download Only On Wi-Fi setting prevents downloads over a cellular connection; turning that setting off allows cellular downloads. Check your device plan and available storage before choosing the cellular route, since Libby notes that most audiobooks are larger than 300 MB.

Can I listen to Libby audiobooks offline on a computer?
Not through Libby's browser experience. Libby says its download settings are unavailable on libbyapp.com and its web app needs an internet connection. Use the mobile app when the listen must work offline.
How do I know my Libby audiobook is downloaded?
Open Shelf and Loans. Libby distinguishes a downloaded loan from a cloud-status loan; a cloud-status audiobook will stream and needs a connection. For a manual download, use the download control beside the active loan and wait for the download to complete.
Will a Libby audiobook still play offline after its due date?
