How do you listen to Libby audiobooks in the car?

Borrow and prepare the audiobook in Libby first, then use the route your car supports. Bluetooth is the simple phone-to-speaker route; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto put Libby controls on compatible dashboards; and some vehicles can run Libby directly through Android Automotive. Download the loan in the mobile app before a weak-signal trip, and make every setup change while parked.

Libby supports audiobook loans through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it also has a separate app route for cars with Android Automotive. If the car is simply a Bluetooth audio destination, start the borrowed audiobook from Libby on the phone and send its audio to the paired stereo. The dashboard system, phone, connection method, and available controls vary by vehicle, so do the pairing, sign-in, title selection, and download check while safely parked.

Pair the phone with the car, choose the car as the audio output, and start the borrowed audiobook in the Libby mobile app. This sends phone audio through the stereo; it does not by itself create a Libby screen on the dashboard.

Compatible phone projection

Apple CarPlay or Android Auto

These show compatible app controls on the vehicle display. Libby documents both routes for audiobook loans, but the car, phone, cable or wireless connection, and app setup must all be compatible.

Built into selected cars

Android Automotive

This is Google's in-car operating system, not Android Auto. If the vehicle runs it, Libby says you can install its vehicle app and connect it with a setup code from the phone.

Before the drive

Make the loan, connection, and download decisions while parked.

  1. Confirm that the title is an active loan. In Libby, open Shelf, then Loans, and select Open Audiobook. A saved title or a hold is not ready to play until the library has lent it to you.
  2. Choose one car-audio route. Use Bluetooth for direct phone audio, CarPlay or Android Auto only when the car supports that dashboard system, or Android Automotive only when the car itself runs that operating system. The vehicle manual is the authoritative source for its pairing and connection menus.
  3. Download the loan if the route may lose service. Libby's mobile app can download audiobook loans for offline use. In Menu, choose Downloads to check whether audiobooks download automatically and whether downloads are restricted to Wi-Fi. The browser version at libbyapp.com needs an internet connection, so it is not the offline option.
  4. Start the exact audiobook and test sound. Check the car's selected input, the phone's output, volume, and the loan's playback before moving. For a dashboard interface, make sure Libby appears and the borrowed title is visible before relying on it.
  5. Keep controls driver-safe. Decide on speed, bookmarks, and the first chapter while stopped. Use vehicle controls or voice controls only where lawful and safe, and pull over for any task that needs attention on a screen.

Dashboard routes

CarPlay, Android Auto, and Android Automotive are related—but not interchangeable.

Apple CarPlay: Libby says to tap Libbyfrom the CarPlay home screen, then choose a borrowed audiobook. Its Now Playing screen can pause or play, skip back or forward 15 seconds, and change speed from 1x to 2x. Apple says the car and country or region must support CarPlay; the connection may use the car's USB port or, on compatible vehicles, a wireless setup. If Libby is absent from the display, check that it is installed on the iPhone and that the car supports CarPlay-compatible apps before changing any driving-time settings.

Android Auto: Libby's current path is to connect to the car, open Libby from Android Auto's media-app list, choose the audiobook, then select Resume or use Chapters or Bookmarks. Libby says its player can pause or play, skip 15 seconds in either direction, and change speed. If a Libby notification player is already shown, Libby notes that you can start playback from it instead.

Android Automotive: This is a car-native app route. Libby directs you to the vehicle's entertainment-console app store, where you install and launch Libby. On the phone, open Menu, choose Copy To Another Device under Your Information, then choose the Android Automotive vehicle option to generate a setup code. Enter that code in the car console; Libby says borrowed audiobooks then sync to the vehicle app.

Offline listening

A completed mobile-app download helps with reception; it does not extend the library loan.

Libby distinguishes streaming from downloading in its mobile app. The Downloads settings let you choose whether audiobook loans download automatically after borrowing and whether downloads may use cellular data. Large audiobooks can be excluded by a size-based automatic-download setting, so check that the exact loan has finished downloading before a long drive instead of assuming every borrowed title is available offline.

Downloading is not the same as owning a title. The loan still follows the due date set by the lending library. Troubleshooting

Identify whether the problem is the loan, the phone, or the car connection.

Libby is not on the dashboard: First separate Bluetooth from a dashboard integration. Bluetooth can play phone audio without placing the Libby app on the screen. For CarPlay or Android Auto, confirm the vehicle supports that system and that the phone connection has completed. For Android Automotive, install the vehicle app and use the vehicle-specific setup code rather than looking for Android Auto controls.

The audiobook has no sound:Check the car's input and the phone's output, then test Libby with the paired accessory while parked. Libby's Bluetooth troubleshooting starts by unpairing the accessory, restarting the device, then pairing again. If the trouble affects other audio apps or accessories too, Libby says the phone, accessory, or their manufacturer may be the more relevant support path.

Playback stops away from coverage: Make sure you are using the mobile app and that the borrowed audiobook is fully downloaded. A browser session at libbyapp.com needs an internet connection.
