Quick answer
Use a credit only when the upcoming title shows that option and you want that order locked in.
Audible says that eligible members can choose Pre-order Now with 1 credit or a cash pre-order on the mobile and desktop site for participating upcoming titles. Credits are a benefit of selected membership plans, not every Audible account. The listing is the source of truth: it tells you whether that edition is available for pre-order, which payment choices it currently offers, and when the audiobook is expected to enter your Library.
Before you confirm
Check the edition, payment route, and access you actually need.
- Open the exact upcoming audiobook listing. Narrator, language, runtime, release date, and purchase options can differ between editions. A future release is not automatically available for pre-order or for a credit redemption.
- Look for the live pre-order choice. On Audible mobile or desktop web, the available choices may include Pre-order Now with 1 credit or a cash amount. If the credit option is not shown, do not assume that another title's option applies here.
- Confirm that the credit belongs to an eligible membership benefit. Audible says only members can use credits received with a plan. If you are comparing plans or have a credit that could expire, inspect the current Credit summary before ordering.
- Read the confirmation before submitting it. The final screen is where Audible presents the current price, payment method, release information, and order terms. Keep the confirmation email and use Purchase history or My pre-orders to review the order later.

Credit or cash
The two pre-order routes have different timing and trade-offs.
Pre-order with 1 credit
The credit is applied to the order.
Audible says a credit used for a pre-order remains applied even if you later cancel the membership. That can be useful when you already know the exact edition you want, but it also means the decision should be based on the live listing rather than a projected cash price or a different edition's runtime.
Pre-order for a cash price
The card is charged at release, not when you order.
Audible says a credit- or debit-card pre-order is charged when the audiobook is available for download. For eligible unreleased items, Audible's Pre-order Price Guarantee compares the price when you ordered with the price at release and charges the lower amount; confirm that the guarantee appears in the current terms for your order.
Neither route makes an audiobook available before its release. Audible says it sends a confirmation when a pre-order is placed and another when the title is ready in your Library. If the title is already released, use the current options on its detail page instead; Audible's ordinary purchase guidance can show a credit or cash choice there too.
If your membership may change
A credit pre-order and an unused credit are not the same thing.
Audible says that, after cancellation, a pre-order that already has a credit applied remains secure; a cash pre-order is charged at release and remains accessible through the Amazon account used to place it. That differs from an unused membership credit, which Audible says is generally lost at the end of the final billing cycle. Review the order and your account's billing source before changing a plan or cancelling.
For the broader before-cancellation decision, read what happens to Audible books when you cancel. If the upcoming title is already included in the current catalog, a credit may not be needed for temporary listening; our Plus Catalog credit guide explains that separate access decision.
Common questions
Pre-order details to check before committing a credit.
Can anyone use a credit to pre-order on Audible?
No. Audible says the 1-credit pre-order choice is for members who receive credits as a membership benefit. A title can still have a cash pre-order path for an Amazon account holder, but confirm the options shown on that listing.
Can you cancel an Audible pre-order?
Audible says you can cancel a pre-order from Purchase history in your membership details. Before changing an order, check the live account page for the current title status and confirmation details.
Does an Audible pre-order use a credit for a Plus Catalog title?
Pre-order availability, catalog inclusion, and purchase choices can change. If a title becomes included later, that does not by itself answer whether a separate purchase meets your needs; verify its current label and see how the Audible Plus Catalog works before redeeming another credit.
