Quick answer
Compare the title's access label, not just the monthly credit.
Audible says anyone with an Amazon account can buy an eligible title with a credit card or Audible coupon, while members can use credits they receive with a plan. Kobo says listeners can buy audiobooks from Kobo.com and, in the United States and several other listed countries, subscribe for one audiobook credit each month. Kobo says only titles that show Get it for 1 creditare eligible for that credit route. Audible's Plus Catalog is a separate kind of access: its included titles can change and can lock after an eligible membership ends.
At a glance
Both can be a purchase service; Audible also has membership-included listening.
Audible
Credit, cash, or included access
Audible's Help Center separates cash or credit purchases from titles included through the Plus Catalog. The purchase options shown on a title can differ, and a Plus title is not the same as a title you buy. Check the listing and checkout before spending a credit.
Kobo
Cash purchase or an eligible monthly credit
Kobo says its audiobook subscription provides one credit per month in Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and other listed markets. A title must show Kobo's 1-credit option to use that credit; otherwise, review the live cash purchase route.
Do not assume two listings for the same book are interchangeable. Before you pay, compare narrator, language, runtime, abridged status, release date, and the exact access label. That edition-level check is more useful than comparing headline plan names.
Access after checkout
A downloaded title and a purchased title are not automatically the same thing.
Audible says titles purchased with a credit or payment card remain in your Library after cancellation, but Plus Catalog access can end when you are no longer an eligible member or when a title leaves the catalog. That is why the live title label matters: a download can be useful for offline listening without changing its membership-access rule. Our Audible cancellation guide explains the checks to make before ending a plan.
Kobo's subscription help tells listeners to use remaining credits before cancelling, and its subscription page shows the next billing date and credit count. Treat that as a prompt to inspect your account before changing plans. For either service, retain the order confirmation and verify the exact account, marketplace, and title conditions rather than relying on a generic rule.
Where you can listen
Kobo's eReader support is model-specific; test your intended route early.
Audible
Confirm the device and access type
Audible's purchase choices appear across its Android app, site, and Amazon routes. Before committing to a membership for a trip or a device, check whether the exact title is purchased or included, then confirm its download and playback route.
Kobo
Use mobile apps or select Bluetooth eReaders
Kobo says audiobooks play in its iOS and Android apps and on select Kobo eReaders with Bluetooth. It says audiobooks do not play in Kobo Desktop, so a desktop-only setup is not a fit for Kobo audiobook playback.
Kobo recommends downloading an audiobook over Wi-Fi before listening away from home. If Audible is the service you are considering, use our offline-download guide and device-compatibility guide to validate the particular setup first.
Decision guide
Choose the service that matches this title, this country, and this listening setup.
- Find the same edition on both services. Check narrator, language, runtime, and availability before using price or a credit as the deciding factor.
- Label the access. On Audible, distinguish a credit or cash purchase from current Plus Catalog access. On Kobo, look for its Get it for 1 credit option rather than assuming every audiobook uses a subscription credit.
- Match your country and billing route. Kobo lists its audiobook-credit subscription only for supported markets, and retailers can vary their catalog, price, and payment choices by marketplace.
- Test the player before a deadline. Check your headphones, car, phone, or supported Kobo eReader with a sample or completed download before travel.
- Review before a plan change. Check credits, renewal date, purchases, and included titles in the live account area before you cancel or switch.
This is not a declaration that either service is universally preferable. It is a decision framework for a listener who wants a particular title and a known playback route. If your alternative is a library loan rather than a store purchase, compare Audible and Libby before spending a credit.
Common questions
Questions that can change the purchase decision.
Can I buy one audiobook without joining Audible or Kobo?
Yes. Audible says anyone with an Amazon account can buy eligible titles à la carte with a credit card or Audible coupon. Kobo says audiobooks can be purchased from Kobo.com. Check the listing, price, and checkout options for your location because each retailer controls them.
Does every Kobo audiobook work with a subscription credit?
No. Kobo says only eligible audiobooks show Get it for 1 credit. If that button is not present, review the purchase choices on the live title page; do not presume that a credit applies to every title.
Can I listen to Kobo audiobooks on a computer?
Kobo says audiobooks are not available in its Kobo Desktop app. Its supported routes are the Kobo Books app for iOS or Android and select Kobo eReaders with Bluetooth.
