Quick answer
Remove the download for storage; permanently delete only when you mean to lose the title everywhere.
Audible separates the local file on a phone or tablet from the title in your account. To reclaim storage, open Library, use the title's three-dot menu, and select Remove from device. Audible says purchased titles remain yours to keep and can be downloaded again. To permanently remove an audiobook from the account, use Amazon's Manage Your Content and Devices page or contact Customer Support; Audible says you will no longer be able to access that title in your Library or on any device.
Choose the right action
These similarly named controls have very different consequences.
Free device storage
Remove a download from the app
Use this when the audiobook file is taking space on the phone or tablet. Audible says the title stays in the account Library; for iPhone and iPad, its current guidance also describes selecting multiple downloads to remove at once.
Clear an unavailable inclusion
Remove a locked title from Library
Audible says a lock can indicate a former Plus Catalog or Standard membership title that is no longer available. Its help page describes a Remove from Library control for those locked titles in the app and on the website.
Erase account access
Permanently delete through Amazon
Use Amazon's Manage Your Content and Devices page only when you intend to lose Library access on every device. Audible says permanent deletion cannot be reversed.
Free storage safely
Remove the local audiobook file from the Audible app.
- Open Library in the Audible app. Find the downloaded audiobook you want to clear from this device.
- Open the title's three-dot menu. Select Remove from device. Audible describes this as the route for a specific title download.
- For several downloads on iOS, use Select. Audible says the iOS app can select multiple titles and then use Remove download. Check the labels shown by your current app version before confirming.
- Return later and download again if needed. Removing a device file does not permanently delete a title from your account. A purchased title remains in the Library; included membership access follows its own availability rules.
If the aim is offline listening rather than storage cleanup, read our guide to downloading Audible books. It explains why a completed download and a streamed title are not the same thing.
Locked titles
Do not mistake a lock icon for a deleted purchase.
Audible says a lock can appear when membership access ends or when a title is no longer included in the Plus Catalog. That is different from deleting a purchased audiobook. Audible's locked-title guidance says purchases made with cash or credits remain in the Library, while titles added as included membership benefits depend on an active eligible membership and continued catalog availability.
If you no longer want a locked former inclusion in the Library view, Audible describes Remove from Library in the title's three-dot menu in the app. On the website, it describes using the title's Remove button. If you are trying to preserve a purchase while changing membership, see what happens to Audible books after cancellation before removing anything.
Permanent account deletion
Use Amazon's content-management page only after a final check.
Audible says permanent audiobook deletion is available through Amazon's Manage Your Content and Devices page or through Customer Support. In Amazon's page, choose the Content filter, find the audiobook, select Delete, then confirm the permanent deletion. This is separate from removing an app download.
Before confirming, verify the edition and account. Audible says a permanently deleted title cannot be accessed again in your Library or on any device. If the title only seems to be missing, first check the app's Lists area and its Hidden list; Audible documents that a hidden title can be restored to the Library view by removing it from that list.
Common questions
Avoid the two most common deletion mistakes.
Does removing an Audible book from my device cancel my purchase?
No. Audible says removing a title from a device does not permanently delete it. A purchased title remains in the Library, so you can download it again on an eligible device.
Can I permanently delete an Audible book in the app?
Audible says permanent deletion is done through Amazon's Manage Your Content and Devices website or with Customer Support. The app's device-removal control is for clearing a local download.
Can I remove a locked Plus Catalog title?
Yes. Audible's current locked-title instructions describe Remove from Library for a locked title in the app and a Remove button on the website. That is relevant to an unavailable included title; it does not turn the title into a purchase or restore access.
